Vape Review: OBS Cube X E-Cig Kit 80W

Killer looks and foolproof functionality combine in a fantastic kit for new vapers and experienced sub-ohm enthusiasts alike

Following the popularity of their Cube 80w starter kit, OBS have answered the cries of many of their fans with the addition of a new X model which features a compartment for an external battery.

While this gives the X user the versatility to carry an extra battery and swap out as needed, the Cube X shares all the same qualities with the original starter kit with its internal battery, which makes this review a great opportunity to explore what makes the Cube such a fantastic sub-ohm kit.

Design

At first glance, the squared-off body of the Cube X doesn’t appear the most ergonomical of mods but that all changes the minute you hold the thing. The curved edges sit snugly within the folds of the hand, and the extra heft provided by that external 18650 battery makes it feel perfectly weighted. At 12.5cm tall, the Cube X is surprisingly discreet and compact for daily use, but it feels reassuring in the palm and sturdy on a desk.

Our test device came in a groovy ‘nano ink’ design; all metallic swirls, black trim, brushed steel firing button and up-down buttons. OBS have made sure that every Cube X iteration pairs the colour design across the zinc alloy and resin mod and the drip tip, ensuring a consistency that makes every kit feel unique. We have a special affection for the Cube X’s 810 drip tip which not only fits the lips nicely but whose shape lends the tank a pebbly smooth, rounded profile that contrasts smartly with the straight lines of the mod it sits on top of

Performance

While OBS have pitched the Cube X at the mid-range vaper, owing to its 80w max range and sweet spot of about 60-70w, the performance of the coils and tank could fool even power-vapers used to great rolling banks of clouds and pin-sharp flavour. Both coils produce luxurious vapour and accurate flavour, and the airflow on the Cube X tank is smooth, warm and just the right amount of airy.

The Cube X Mod

Simplicity is the name of the game with the Cube X Mod, which forgoes many of the features common to sub-ohm kits such as temperature control, bypass mode or variable voltage. With just variable wattage up to 80w, the adjustable controls lock once you’ve set your wattage and pressed the fire button preventing unintended power spikes.

The buttons have just the right amount of springy feedback, and changing batteries is a cinch with an easy-to-open hatch on the bottom of the device. A bright and clear OLED screen that displays wattage, ohms, voltage and puff counter, and a micro-USB port finish off the external features of the mod.

Cube X Tank

The Cube X tank might be the easiest sub-ohm tank to refill that we’ve yet come across. The top comes off with a light twist yet holds tight to the tank when in use. Large kidney-shaped refill holes reduce spillage and the adjustable airflow sits firmly yet turns smoothly.

The Cube X comes with two coils, the M1 — Single Mesh, 0.20ohm rated for 50-80W and the M3 — Triple Mesh, 0.15ohm rated for 50-70W. Both wick beautifully thanks to premium quality cotton and are easy to swap out. We also found that changing flavours with the same coil is relatively seamless; at 50w and above the coils burn through the previous flavour and suck up the new juice after just a few fires. Very handy if you like changing e-liquid flavour on the go.

Verdict

For all its simplicity the OBS Cube X kit truly punches above its weight. It’s stocky, unconventional looks sets it apart from similarly priced kits.
