Vape Review: Uwell Nunchaku 2 Vape Kit

January 03, 2020

An irresistible blend of style and innovation in a portable pen-style sub-ohm kit, does Uwell’s motion-sensing Nunchaku 2 vape as good as it feels in the hand?

Uwell have a long history of producing some of the finest sub-ohm tanks in the vaping world. So it came as little surprise when their first sub-ohm pen-style mod kit, the Nunchaku, appeared with all the hallmarks of quality and functionality that the company had made their hallmark.

But with the arrival of the Uwell Nunchaku 2 vape kit, it looks like Uwell have perfected that original vision and produced a sub-ohm vape kit that’s looks guaranteed to become a firm favourite among vapers and inspire a stampede of imitators.

But before we get into what’s great about the Nunchaku 2, let’s look at what’s in the box…

Design

With its cool, sci-fi looks and smooth, elegant profile, we think the Nunchaku 2 could be a contender for the best looking vape pen-style kit to come out of 2019. The glossy metallic sheen and simple, minimalist interface can’t fail to draw the eye, and the gently rounded body practically begs to be handled.

Yes, the Nunchaku 2 kit marries aesthetics and ergonomics in a truly stylish vape kit that’s incredibly comfortable in the hand. It feels perfectly weighted and balanced, which must have been engineered with the mod’s motion sensing tricks in mind – more on that in a moment. Pocket-friendly, the kit travels well and can stand sturdy on a desk or workstation.

The choice of frosted glass for the Nunchaku 2 tank adds another unique element to the whole and enhances what is already a fabulous looking – and performing - tank. Where the mod’s finish is brushed metal, the tank is all shine making for a pleasing, subtle visual contrast.

The Nunchaku 2 is available in four distinct colours: sleek black, iridescent rainbow, brilliant blue or stainless-steel chrome (try telling yourself you’re not holding a lightsabre hilt…)

The Mod

One welcome new feature of the Nunchaku 2 mod is the ability to use 18650, 20700, or 21700 batteries as required. This is especially useful now that the mod now fires up to a mighty 100w over the original’s 80w, and ensures you’ll never be without juice if you carry a spare battery with you.

There are more user modes than the original Nunchaku mod, with Temperature control, Variable wattage and a By-pass/Mech mode at your fingertips. There are multiple safety features including short-circuit, low voltage and temperature protection. The screen is inconspicuous yet easy to read and displays your power setting, user mode, coil resistance and battery level.

Perhaps the most intriguing new feature of the Nunchaku 2 is the 6-axis motion sensor which eliminates the need for +/- function keys and allows the kit to be operated almost entirely through wrist movement. Three clicks of the fire button wakes the menu, then it takes a gentle tilt or twist to move the wattage up or down in increments, or a long hold at an angle to move up and down wattage more rapidly. Another click of the fire button ‘locks’ the setting and you’re good to vape.

What felt a little odd on our first try – manipulating the wattage with a tilt of your wrist rather than +/- keys – quickly became natural and actually pleasant given how the Nunchaku 2 seems ideally balanced to support the action. Don’t be surprised if we see more of this kind of innovation appear in 2020.

The Tank

The Nunchaku 2 tank improves on what was already a great tank with an easy top-fill arrangement and silicone seal to all but eliminate leaks. It also uses Uwell’s self-cleaning technology to prevent condensation and keep the airflow clear. The airflow ring turns smoothly without feeling loose and enables everything from a fully restricted airflow to a loose yet very quiet, fully open draw.

The box gives you the choice of two great coils. The 0.2ohm mesh coil works brilliantly around 50w and unleashes tonnes of flavour and big, rolling clouds yet stays smooth on the throat and comfortable to vape. Alternatively, the 0.14ohm mesh coil can be used with temperature control and provides a somewhat warmer vape. When pushed towards the higher end of the 50-60w recommended range, the 0.14 coil becomes an absolute cloud monster and will definitely please the tricksters and chasers out there.

Conclusion

Performance & Final Verdict

The confluence of great tank, superb coils and beefy power catapults the Nunchaku 2 to the very top tier of sub-ohm pen-style mods when it comes to pure vaping pleasure. Whichever coil you use, the Nunchaku 2 delivers sublime flavour that’s pinpoint accurate for the juice you’re using. Boasting premium build quality and gorgeous looks, the Nunchaku 2 is easily one of the best pen-style mods of 2019 and marks Uwell as a truly versatile and innovative player in the vape industry. Taken together with their other runaway success this year, the Caliburn pod kit, Uwell are most definitely a roll.
