Coils
What are Coils?
Also called Coil Heads or Atomiser heads, coils consist of a length of ‘coiled’ wire and a wicking material such as cotton that soaks up the eliquid which turns to vapour upon contact with the electrically charged coil.
Coils can be made from a variety of materials, including mesh wire, ceramic, titanium or kanthal wire, and every material produces a slightly different quality of vapour and flavour.
What are Coil Resistances and Ohms?
High resistance coils usually range from 1.0 ohms to 3.0ohms. Coils with a resistance below 1.0ohms are known as ‘sub-ohm’ coils and can range from 0.9ohms to 0.1ohms and lower. Higher resistance coils use a lower power output from the battery and tend to produce less vapour. Low resistance, or sub-ohm coils, draw a higher output from the battery and produce larger, denser clouds.
What are MTL and DL vaping?
MTL stands for Mouth-to-Lung, a style of vaping that most closely mimics smoking traditional cigarettes. With MTL, you draw vapour from your device, hold it briefly in your mouth, and then inhale into the lungs. MTL vaping is most commonly associated with high-resistance coils and devices that produce moderate amounts of vapour. This method delivers a more familiar, comfortable and satisfying experience, especially for those seeking an alternative to smoking. E-liquids commonly used with MTL coils include high-PG, 50/50, and nicotine salts.
RDL (also called RDTL) stands for Restricted Direct-to-Lung vaping. It offers a middle ground between MTL and DTL styles. With RDL, the draw is slightly looser than MTL but more restricted than full DTL, creating a balance of vapour production and flavour. Coils designed for RDL typically have mid-range resistances – between 0.4-0.8ohms, and these devices are compatible with a wider range of e-liquids, including 50/50 blends, 10mg nic salts and lower VG options.
DTL stands for Direct-to-Lung, a style of vaping that involves drawing vapour straight into the lungs. DTL vaping is most associated with sub-ohm coils with low resistance (hence the term ‘Sub-Ohm vaping’, and high-powered devices that produce large clouds of vapour. This style is best suited for high-VG e-liquids, offering a smooth and richly flavoured experience that’s ideal for cloud chasers.
